Increasing Energy and Avoiding Fatigue

Email

By Frank P. Sweet, MBA, NMD

The topic for this month is important in the field of medicine and longevity. How do we increase energy? How does one maintain energy production? Perhaps to put this in another way, and based on the complaints I have heard from thousands of patients is, “doctor, I am so tired“.

We can define energy simply as the body’s ability to break down complex proteins, fats and carbohydrates into simple amino acids, sugars and fats, absorb them in to the cells and convert those simple molecules into ATP or adenosine triphosphate. This is the definition of energy, the production of ATP and is performed largely in the mitochondria of each cell which usually contain about 1000 per cell.

This is a new branch of medicine called, mitochondria disease or the body’s failure to produce ATP from energy sources which are the broken down foods we eat. Biochemically when ATP, adenosine triphosphate, kicks off a phosphate it becomes adenosine diphosphate, and gives off energy. Three phosphates go to two phosphates and a resulting release of energy. Then a phosphate is added back on an ADP or diphosphate which goes back to ATP. This happens millions of times a minute.

Perhaps a bit off the subject, but relative to energy production is the quality of food. So much food is dead and devitalized and loaded with preservatives, chemicals and dyes. This is a burden to the body and stresses the organs of elimination such as the liver, kidneys, lungs and skin.

If you will, consider the actual production of energy in the plant or photosynthesis which the use of sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make carbon compounds and simple sugars. This fundamental process of producing oxygen and organic compounds is profound in its meaning. Importantly, we exchange a waste by-product, carbon dioxide for oxygen which is given off in photosynthesis. However, and this is important, is the quality of the plant. Is it exposed to chemicals, sprays and pesticides that are incorporated into the actual carbon and sugar compounds of the plants? Does the water that actually feeds the plant and the process of photosynthesis restrict or inhibit the formation of organic carbons and sugars?

That is one reason we encourage our patients and customers to eat fresh picked, organic or wild crafted vegetables and fruits to extract the highest amounts of simple carbons and sugars from the foods they eat.

Then live, fresh picked, organic food produces the maximum amount of potential ATP. The more a food is processed the less potential energy it can produce. We can say, yes, if I eat candy I feel an immediate energy surge, but at the terrible cost of type two diabetes, elevated triglycerides, exhausted adrenal function and overstimulation of the brain by the release of stress hormones cortisone and cortisol. These are a MAJOR cause of anxiety and depression and inflammation in the body generally and specifically the artery wall.

So how do you increase energy production? First of all, I use
Bell Lifestyle Products and especially their unique and innovative use of polyamines spermine and spermidine. The polyamines allow for normal cell function including the cell energy engine, the mitochondria. These two substances also allow for normal cell death called apoptosis which if it does not occur normally can cause cancer or abnormal cell growth. Remember. It is important the cellular machinery works efficiently to produce the maximum amount of ATP or energy.

So besides the above mentioned spermine and spermidine what are the primary energy producers? I list five primary producers of energy:

#1-Magnesium-400 to 600mgs a day

#2-
Co-enzyme Q 10-Best used as Ubiquinol rather than Ubiquinone. Dosage on Ubiquinol is 200mgs per day and ubiquinone 1000mgs per day. Just a side note, all statin drugs destroy co-enzyme Q- 10. You MUST take co-enzyme Q-10 if you take statins to avoid heart and muscle damage. If your doctor does not know this you can inform him or her or have them Google the information.

#3-L-carnitine or acetyl L-carnitine at a dosage of about 1500mgs per day. Carnitine takes fat (fatty acids) and shoves them into the mitochondria for fuel.

#4-D-ribose sugar- This is a sugar alcohol that is readily available in most health food stores or companies that sell health products. Very important in the process of turning food into energy.  Dosage is 5-10 grams per day.

#5- A good
multivitamin and mineral taken with food at least two times per day. Vitamins and minerals are critical in body’s energy production cycles.

Further, I recommend two or three small and nutritious meals per day and try not to start your day of with cereals, or juice or bagels or toast or you will release insulin and become hypoglycemic and…tired. Of course, diabetics and others may have to modify their diets depending upon their doctors suggestions.

I do not eat breakfast or if I am hungry I eat a piece of low glycemic fruit such as an apple. My diet consists of about six ounces of protein with frozen or fresh vegetables so NOT trigger the release of insulin which may cause diabetes and further exhaust you by stressing your adrenal glands and causing long term adrenal fatigue.

Remember, the less you eat the longer you live and the more organic you eat the longer you live and the less chemicals and preservatives you eat the longer you will live and the more energy you will have. It is a seemly strange thing that we actually can make more energy if we eat less food especially less simple carbohydrates. If we flood the bloodstream with insulin it drops the blood sugar and causes the adrenals to produce cortisol in an effort to normalize sugars. This causes profound fatigue from both hypoglycemia and adrenal fatigue.

Purchase or rent Tom Hank’s excellent movie, Castaway, and you will see that a man who eats little, gets sun and exercise and becomes totally healed physically and emotionally. What did he eat? Fish, seafood, coconuts and water. This gave him essential fatty acids, protein, good oils and clean water. How simple is that???

Another tremendous book is, The 120 Year Diet, by Roy Walford, MD. You may remember Dr. Walford was one of eight individuals locked in the Biosphere 20 years ago in a town called Oracle Junction, near Tucson, Arizona. They existed on about 1200 calories of fresh organic foods grown organically. I remember this well because I lived in the area.

Here are other energy boosters:

#1-Exercise
#2-Rest
#3-Massage therapy
#4-Relaxation of all kinds, music, yoga, meditation.
#5-Friends
#6-Vacation time
#7-Avoid depleting radiation from cell phones, computer, television and other electronic equipment as much as possible.

Simply, food in, energy out and waste is excreted by the cells. Eat simply and organically with the idea that less is more. The cells seem to function more efficiently if not constantly flooded with food.

Blood tests you may consider are freeT3 and freeT4 thyroid tests. DO NOT rely on a thyroid TSH. It is, in my opinion, a weak and often inaccurate thyroid test. Also, have your physician check your AM cortisol levels or an ACTH challenge to test your adrenal function.

In World Medicine there is a saying, “reduce your food intake by 50% and increase your life span by 30%”. I will add to that by telling you to eat foods that are nutritionally dense and calorie poor not the other way around.

With gratitude,

Frank P. Sweet, MBA, NMD
