About high-protein
diets
The John Hopkins Medical Letter, published in association with the
John Hopkins Medical Institutions, say the following: High-protein,
low-carbohydrate diets like the Atkins diet, Protein Power, and
Carbohydrate Addict's Diet all but eliminate carbohydrates and replace
them with additional protein. This boils down to a diet rich in
animal products like meat, eggs, and cheese, but few grains, and
vegetables. However, too low an intake of carbohydrates will place
the body into an unnatural state known as ketosis. It starves the
body of carbohydrates and the body burns fat as a consequence. It
is similar to people going on a hunger strike. They lose fat too.
Experts condemn these diets as unhealthy on a long term basis. Prolonged
ketosis can cause kidney damage, fatigue, irritability, lack of
mental clarity, loss of muscle mass and increased hunger. Also,
a diet high in animal protein is high in fat and lacks adequate
vitamins, minerals and fiber, which may increase the risk of cancers
osteoporosis, and, especially, hear disease. High-protein diets
are appealing because they often result in rapid weight loss, at
least initially, due to the loss of body fluids. However, people
tend to regain the weight eventually. The safest and most effective
way to lose weight is a balanced, low-calorie diet combined with
regular exercise.
About fad diets
Diets that say that their plan lets you eat any food you crave do
not work. This is illogical and gimmicky. If you do eat fatty or
sweet foods until you are full, you are overloaded with calories
that go straight to your fat reserves. You need foods that you can
enjoy AND fill you up at the same time.
Never take pills
for losing weight, because you cannot take pills all your life.
You can lose weight NATURALLY by adjusting your habits and food
choices. Don't take pills to absorb the fat out of the food you
eat. Don't eat that fat or fatty food in the first place.
