The results contained in the almost 600 questionnaires that were returned amounted, Italian dailies lamented yesterday, to “a real disaster.” Corriere della Sera, the leading Italian daily, described the findings as “a fatal blow to the Italians’ reputation for being fiery lovers–a reputation already tarnished some years ago ... the life between the sheets of the Bel Paese (Italy) is in a worrying state of crisis.” The sex lives of the average Italian, it transpires, are little better than a form of torture. For around one-third of males, sex is pretty well a non-starter: nearly 30 per cent complained of an inability to perform, slightly more than that of problems in achieving orgasm, 33.6 per cent of difficulty of achieving erection and 35.5 per cent of difficulty in maintaining it. Dr. Raffaella Michielli, one of the GPs involved in setting up the study, blamed “rhythms of work and crisis of roles” as two of the factors involved. She and her colleagues warn that the negative results of an unhappy sex life can include hypochondria, irritation and tension. But this is not the first report throwing doubt on the fiery Italian libido: in 2000 a nationwide investigation reported that 60 per cent of Italian men were anxious about their sexual performance, and that 37 per cent of stable couples only got around to having sex once a week.
